EHP To Build SFVU Centre

Victims of family violence in Eastern Highlands Province, will now be provided a safe haven to seek assistance and other support services.

This comes after an agreement was signed between Australian officials, and Governor Julie Soso, this week in Goroka.

The initiative is another effort by all stakeholders, to end violence against women and children.

Eastern Highlands Governor, Julie Soso, says the people really need the centre as number of cases increase each day. She thanked the Australian Government for the assistance and says, the partnership will grow to transform people’s lives.

Present at the announcement and signing was Australia’s Ambassador for Women and Girls, Natasha Stott Despoja. She said, the fight against violence is everywhere and building a centre, is a critical step in addressing the problem. “Violence is everywhere, not only in PNG, Australia is facing it as well”, she added.

The centre will be built inside the perimeter of the Goroka Base General Hospital.  It will also provide protection orders, health services, and safe emergency housing.

Australia will assist with K650, 000 in funds, to build the centre.
