Eda Ranu: North East Water

Port Moresby-based water provider, Eda Ranu, has, over the years, been hesitant to provide water in settlements in the city, due to non-payment of water bills.

However, that trend is about to change under good leadership, and the fact that most working class people now reside in settlements, because housing is a major problem.

Member for North-East and Vice Minister for Sports, Labi Amaiu, and the Eda Ranu Management, visited areas in his electorate, to personally tell them, that they will now have water.

Makana and Morobe Block are located at 9 Mile in the North-East Electorate. These areas are home to many working class people, who now reside there, because it’s affordable to rent rooms in the settlements. This is one of the reasons why Eda Ranu decided to bring water supply into the area.

In past years, it was difficult for Eda Ranu to provide water, because no one was willing to pay for the water bills. However, under good leadership, Eda Ranu is now able to do so, and want the community to contribute monthly, to pay for the bills.

Member for North-East, Labi Amaiu told the people that, in the first instance, it was very difficult to convince Eda Ranu, because both Makana and Morobe Block, were black-listed by Eda Ranu.

However, he convinced them and topped it off with his DSIP commitment of K800, 000, equally allocated for Makana and Morobe.

Mr. Amaiu reiterated the same challenge as the Eda Ranu Chief Executive Officer. He told his people to simply pay their water bills.

Apart from the water upgrade, the North East District through its DSIP funds, has spent K760, 000 on roads in the Electorate.
