Doctors Give Police Ultimatum

Rouge Police Officers who beat a young doctor doing his residency at the Port Moresby General Hospital may cause a doctors strike in the Nation’s capital.

It was  last Wednesday that Dr Newman Berry was assaulted by Policemen in Tokarara.

The National Doctors Association said the police hierarchy has till Friday to find out which officers were responsible for the beating, charge and remove them.

The beating of Dr.Newman Berry has sent shock waves throughout the country with the public taking to social media to air their concern of the incident and police brutality.

” We are giving the police hierarchy this time to discipline these police officers,” said a representative.

This was apparent on EMTV Online on Facebook shared the news.

The actions of about six police officers could delay the treatment of patients seeking help in Port Moresby hospitals, if the Police hierarchy doesn’t charge and remove them before Friday.

A group of very senior doctors from the National Doctors Association gathered this afternoon (07/06/18) with Dr. Newman Berry who was beaten by police last week Wednesday.

National Doctors Association President, Dr. James Naipao says doctors around NCD will stop working and only emergencies will be treated.

They have put out an ultimatum that demands and holds the police hierarchy accountable for the actions of a few policemen tarnishing the reputation of the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary.

Papua New Guinean doctors nationwide have reached a general consensus and collectively spoken through their association, they want the cops responsible charged and removed from the police force in 48 hours.

The doctors also released an eight page document highlighting the lack of training police officers receive in six months and the need for a signed MOU with the RPNGC.

Dr Newman Berry was severely beaten by Police officers allegedly under the influence of alcohol.

He said he was dropping off his sister and was not drunk at the time. The Policemen accused him of dropping off criminals and then started to beat him.

The beating of Dr. Berry comes at the most crucial time, with polling just around the corner, the Police force have been entrusted by the government to maintain public safety.

There has been a public outcry on social media is demanding an action from the Police Commissioner, Gari Baki and the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary.
