ABG Welcomes Ombudsman Commission

The President of Papua New Guinea’s Autonomous Bougainville Government, Chief John Momis has welcomed the establishment of the Office of the Ombudsman Commission of Papua New Guinea.

Speaking in Buka today during the opening, Chief Momis says that the Autonomous Bougainville Government is committed to support them in their work to weed out corruption.

“On behalf of the Autonomous Bougainville Government, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts, for giving us this service, to help the government and the people of Bougainville, to excel in good governance and to uphold the principles of integrity and justice,” he said.

Momis said that the capacity of the Ombudsman Commission to investigate complaints would be significantly enhanced.

And the ABG is committed to principles of honesty, transparency and leadership.

“The opening today represents an important step to ensure that the Autonomous Bougainville Government fulfills this commitment and obligation,”

“This is possible through the Memorandum of Understanding that was executed in June 2016 between the Autonomous Bougainville Government and the Ombudsman Commission of Papua New Guinea,” he said.

Chief Ombudsman, Michael Dick told EMTV News in Buka that the new office of the Ombudsman Commission will assists to promote good leadership and governance for Bougainville.

He said that the Autonomous Bougainville Government has indeed provided for the establishment of an Ombudsman Commission in its Constitution and thanked Bougainville leaders for this important inclusion.

“The noble, above all the visions is a corruption free Bougainville,” he said

“OCPNG is proud to establish its officer here in the Autonomous Region of Bougainville. I take this moment to acknowledge the efforts and the support of people who have brought the idea of having the office here in Bougainville and they are the former Ombudsman, Phoebe Sangetari, OCPNG Officers, Australian High Commission, New Zealand High Commission and the Autonomous Bougainville Government,” he said.

The Chief Ombudsman said the people of Bougainville can now appreciate and embrace the presence and services of the Ombudsman Commission in the Autonomous Region of Bougainville which is a way forward.
