Fishing Facilities Questioned

Kavieng MP who is also Public State and Investments Minister Ben Micah has called on the National Fisheries Authority to explain, why the fish processing plant in New Ireland Province has not been operating.

This question came into effect, while officiating at the Fisheries Co-operative new ship launching, in Kavieng this week.

Mr Micah said he was disappointed as the fish processing plant in Kavieng, launched some years back, has ceased operating resulting in a waste of public money.

With Kavieng on a bid to become Papua New Guinea's fishing capital, such facilities are important, as it supports the generation of income and drives the economy forward.

Mr Micah said this fish plant should operate to support business activities for the Fisheries Co-operative Society of the Niu Ailan Co-operative Association.

The New Ireland Provincial Government, National Fisheries Authority and stakeholders must negotiate properly and look at ways where locals can benefit.

Comments from the National Fisheries Authority were unsuccessful.
