Unitech Day 4

The boycotting of classes at the Lae’s University of Technology has gone into its fourth day.

Student representatives met last night after the Minister of a Higher Education, Delilah Gore, failed to turn up at the campus to talk to the students.

The next course of action is not publicly made known yet by the SRC, but for now, the boycott continues.

What that has been happening at the Unitech campus in Lae over the past week has been an impasse.

Provincial authorities, including the University’s administration, who have talked to the students, have appealed for them to go back to classes.

But up until today, the protesting students have stood fast, refusing to budge on the boycott.

They want Schram back as the Vice Chancellor.

Earlier this week, on Tuesday, the students put together a petition and presented it to the administration, giving them 48 hours to respond.

Yesterday, the 48 hour ultimatum was over.

Yesterday’s attempt by the Minister for Higher Education, Science and Technology, who came to Lae to talk to the students with the hope of resolving the issue, wasn’t successful.

However, the Higher Education Minister did convene a meeting at the National Agricultural Research Institute, several kilometers away from the UNITECH campus.

Meanwhile, Morobe Governor Kelly Naru, has again, publicly pleaded with the students to return to classes.

But his call appears not to have had any effect on the standoff at the Unitech campus.

Student representatives met last night and sought students views for their next course of action.

While the SRC is yet to disclose its next move, the boycott appears to have no end in sight, just yet.
