A total of 12 illiterate women candidates from West New Britain and Jiwaka Province, have travelled to India to take up engineering courses in Barefoot College.
The humble mothers said the opportunity will empower them to bring valuable skills back to their villages. Spokesperson Ursula Kumley, who is a midwife in the Kandrian Gloucester Electorate said, the training paves a new direction in their lives.
She thanked the Indian Government for the initiative and the support by West New Britain Provincial Government, to pursue their studies.
Mrs. Kumley said the training will empower them in improving the lives of their people.
West New Britain Governor Sasindran Muthuvel said the intensive training is provided by the Indian Government, with emphasis on rural electrification. He said the exercise comes with cost attached which relevant authorities are in charge of.
Governor Muthuvel added that, the India Government will provide the training.
Courses will include texturing, sewing and related courses with emphasis on rural electrification.
Meanwhile Mr. Muthuvel said the selection of women was done by the Barefoot College with no influence by West New Britain Provincial Government or external forces.
The 6 women candidates from West New Britain join fellow participants from Jiwaka and left PNG shores today.
