The Australian Federal Police in partnership with the Juvenile Justice arm of the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary, gave awareness talks to Marianville students yesterday.
The talk is part of the AFP School Awareness Campaign, and aims to encourage students to make good choices, and stay out of trouble.
The talk was an insight into the Lukautim Pikinini Act, and the realistic consequences of early marriage and/or teenage pregnancies.
Constable Anna Wills from the RPNGC’s Juvenile Justice System used her thirty two years of experience in the Police Department, to tell the students of how difficult life can be if they choose to get married at an early age.
“In one day, I receive forty to fifty cases of women and child abuse, most of the victims are between the ages of thirteen to forty years,” said Constable Wills.
The six hundred plus students were made aware of the importance and advantages of legal marriages, and were strongly urged to remain focused on their studies.
Speaking about establishing a good career, AFP Sergeant Ian Wilham, urged the students to make healthy choices that would best benefit them in the long run.
Della La Salle was the first school the team visited. Gordons Secondary and Port Moresby International School, among others, are schools the team plan on visiting to continue the awareness campaign.
