The National Research Institute and the Australian High Commission, signed a Memorandum of Understanding, that will look at improving the quality of research, and increase analysis of economic, and development issues affecting Papua New Guinea.
Australian High Commissioner, Deborah Stokes, and NRI Council Chairman, Sir Henry Chow, signed the MoU that will see Australia provide up to K8 million over two years to NRI.
The MoU is aimed at increasing the use of evidence in developing public policy, encouraging public debate, and discussion of PNG’s development challenges, improving awareness of economic principles, and encouraging an economic environment, which is increasingly open and competitive.
Under the MoU, Australia will provide K4 million this year, and again next year, to NRI, to help improve the quality of research and increase analysis of economic, and development issues.
Australian High Commissioner, Deborah Stokes, said cooperation between Australia and NRI will include strengthening relationships between NRI and international academic institutions, and supporting the Australian-PNG Network in partnership with the Lowy Institute and The Voice-PNG.
NRI Council Chairman, Sir Henry said NRI was aware of the many problems, affecting the development of the country, and whilst they may look simple, most of them are complex and require a disciplined approach, to analyzing and developing a better understanding of the nature of the problems.
The Institute has not been funded adequately despite continued requests through the normal budgetary process. The funding support from the Australian Government, will enable the Institute, to undertake more economic and public policy research, as well as enabling the Institute to develop its overall capabilities, to support and undertake public policy research.
