Students in Lae have been warned that those involved in fights will be arrested and prosecuted.
This follows the spate of School clashes in the Last two years. Lae Secondary Principal, Chris Raymond, says awareness programs in the past havenโt worked.

During the last several years of increasing school fights, the Government and the Law and justice sector,has tried to convince Secondary School students to stop. This isnโt the first time for awareness programs and it wonโt be the last.

The problem still persists and itโs calling for tougher measures. Community Policing, Officer in Charge, Sergent. Alois Gabuor, says some students listen while others donโt.

This comes after mass arrests in recent fights, with seven students already being prosecuted, two as adults and the rest as juveniles. Itโs understood that settlement clashes and school fights are stemming from the same problems of drug and alcohol consumption.

Students attitude are now compelling School administrations to agree with any government decision to introduce Laws, to prosecute and jail fighting students.

โThe stakeholders like parents are always asking what the government is doing, so passing a law maybe a far ask,โ he says. The challenge now, is to change student mindset, instead of introducing severe laws that may cause more complications.
