The rehabilitation of prisoners is important, and more support should be given in preparing them, before being released back into the society.
Yesterday, the Bomana Correctional Service outside Port Moresby, received over K200, 000, and a vehicle from the Central provincial government, for rehabilitation purposes.
Rehabilitation of prisoners in correctional institutions around the country, have received little attention from the government. Over the years, funding has been a constraint for Warders, to effectively roll out their rehabilitation projects.
Yesterday, prisoners at the Bomana prison outside Port Moresby, were very happy when Central Governor, Kila Haoda, visited them. Governor Haoda, pledged K230,000, from his Provincial Services Improvement Program funds, to assist the prison.
From that money, K100, 000, was allocated to inmates from Central Province alone, who want to initiate new projects, or attend colleges whilst in prison. This money will be used as school fees for inmates from Central province attending colleges.
Another portion of this money will be put into the prison’s rehabilitation program, and the staff and inmates Christmas party.
Mr Haoda, said Correctional Services is an institution mandated to rehabilitate people who disobey the law, and urged inmates to contribute meaningfully to their community, when leaving the prison.
Correctional Services Acting Commissioner, Michael Waipo, said public safety is important, when they release prisoners back into the society. Bomana Jail Commanding Officer, Kiddy Keko, said the money and this new vehicle will help them in many ways.
