Bad Signal: Communications Cut

Communications have been cut off from Yako and Lido villages in the Vanimo Green River District of West Sepik.

This comes after the Diesel standby generator, which powers the Digicel tower in Lido, stopped working more than two months ago. This has disrupted communication, and locals have been denied access to internet services.

In the attempt to power the generator, villagers have improvised to wiring a smaller generator output. However, that has contributed to more unstable signal transmission. As a result, the villagers have raised complains saying, it is expensive to make calls or even surf the net.

Meanwhile, the person responsible for the main Digicel towers in Vanimo told EMTV, that the network will be ungraded to a three Gee (3G) network in June and the tower in lido will become obsolete. Apart from the Digicel network, villagers along the border are still without B Mobile and Telekom signals.
