Land owners from the Rouna Incorporated Land Group say they will cut power and water supply to Port Moresby and Central Province if the government fails to respond to their petition within 14 days.
Since the first Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the state and the landowners in 2003, very little was done to honour the agreement.
The petition was presented to the government last Friday.
These are representatives of the 4 clans in Rouna, a village outside of Port Moresby. They claim that for 15 years, the government has failed in its efforts to recognize and facilitate its promises.
It is on their customary land, that PNG Pawa and Edu Ranu, supply power and water to the Nation’s Capital.
In the petition presented last Friday, the land owners are demanding that the government revisit numerous MOUs signed since 2003.
These commitments includes; developing the elementary school, maintaining roads and improving health facilities in the area.
The people have shut down the power and water supply on numerous counts and have only reopened it only when the government responds.
In a special meeting held last year, the National Executive Council had approved the review of the NEC Decision on the compensation demands.
However, the landowners are still waiting for the promised compensation.
They say, just like the Sirinumu Landowners in Central Province, they also want the state to create a Commercial Entity that will bring both business and commercial benefits to the people.
The people were also promised a package of K50 million by the government last year for the Development Assisted Package (DAP). They say the money has been released but are still waiting for the Treasury Department to pay them.
