Morobe: Overcrowding at Urban Clinic

For the last eighteen months the Milford Haven urban Clinic at Lae’s Papuan Compound has been receiving and treating large number of patients every day.

Most people come from as far as Bulolo, Huon Gulf and the Nawae districts. Shortage of medical drugs hasn’t been a problem for this small clinic. However, the increasing number of people coming in from other places to the clinic has been the major concern for the clinic and the residents.

“Each ward has its own speciality. I’m not sure of the issues with the other wards, but the patients are directed to come to the ward 3 clinic. The patients come as far as Warra Kumalung, Mumeng, Zenag, Parakris…” said Dino Marax, a Community Leader.

In previous years the clinic would see less than 100 patients every day. But with the government’ free healthcare policy, the numbers of patients have doubled. Milford Haven Clinic is one the three major urban clinics that serve as referral clinics to Lae’s Angau Hospital.

Lae is projected to be the industrial capital of Papua New Guinea. As this happens, the demand of people who will be seeking health care is expected to increase and clinics like Milford Haven don’t appear to be ready for it.
