Police officers stormed the National Fraud and Anti-Corruption office demanding the arrest of police officers involved in the arrest of lawyer Sam Bonner three months ago.
Mr Bonner, who is representing Police Commissioner Geoffrey Vaki, said he was assaulted by members of the fraud squad after he refused arrest. Mr Bonner said he only resisted arrest because there was no warrant of arrest against him.
Director of National Fraud and Anti-Corruption unit, Matthew Damaru said his officers acted under the law to arrest Mr Bonner. He however resisted, which led to the officers’ use of excessive force to arrest him. Mr Bonner is also charged with resisting arrest.
Furthermore, Damaru described the actions of police officers this morning as disgraceful to the office of Fraud and Anti-Corruption. He said the officers involved with the arrest of Bonner were taken to the Boroko Police Station for questioning after the commotion ended.
Detective Damaru said what happened this morning also relates to the assault of Detective Primenga on Sunday and the contempt charges against senior police officers.
