Sports Scene – Episode 19, 12014

In this episode:

We look at Scott Prince, who is unveiled as the official Games Ambassador, to basketball, the President of Daru Amateur Basketball Association Bagari David on the association’s progress, the Daru rugby league with its come back details, the National Soccer League Semifinals, and finally, to the sea and the PNG Canoeing Association hosting the racing regatta.

With just six months until the PNG Games, the 2005 Churchill Medal winner Scott Prince has been unveiled as an official Games Ambassador. Prince had an illustrious 15 year playing career, as the halfback represented Australia, Queensland in State of Origin, as well as the Indigenous All Stars.

He played his club football for the West Tigers, whom he led to the 2005 Premiership, winning the Clive Churchill Medal, the Gold Coast Titans, Brisbane Broncos, and the North Queensland Cowboys.

Scott Prince’s Ambassadorial role will comprise a number of visits to PNG in the lead-up to the event, as well as attending the Australia-PNG Business Forum to promote the Games.

On to Rugby, the Daru Rugby league has had its fair share of ups and downs but the sport is now regaining its long lost glory. With the success of the Daru Stingrays in rugby union, let’s hope we see the boys in league action in Port Moresby as well.

To soccer, the finals season in the National Soccer League as quiet achievers ORO FC took on another first time franchise in Lae FC, and defending Champions Hekari went head to head with Gigira Laitepo Morobe.

To the Sea, the PNG Canoeing association had a great day with the sun, wind and surf providing the perfect backdrop as the PNG Canoeing Association hosted its racing regatta at Ela Beach. Konedobu Kanoe Klab and POM Outrigger Canoe Club battled it out with other teams, in the fifteen hundred, one thousand and two fifty metre sprint events, nothing like the sun, surf and sand.
