National Fisheries Authority: Shoreline Clean-a-thon

The National Fisheries Authority led a shoreline clean-a-thon in Port Moresby today, to raise awareness on the harmful effects of waste pollution.

This beach clean–up is part of NFA’s Port Moresby Seascape program under its Fisheries Management Unit.

The program is designed to improve the health of marine habitats, such as mangroves and coral reefs.

Taking part in the clean-a-thon this morning were National Fisheries Authority staff and family members, plus those from other partner organizations in the Seascape program.

The clean-a-thon started from Port Moresby Technical College, spreading out to Kanudi, through to the Tatana turn-off.

Today’s shoreline clean-up is one of the 3 components of NFA’s POM Seascape initiative.

This is the waste management category which aims to minimize marine pollution and habitat degradation from industrial and household waste.

NFA’s Managing Director John Kasu, who led the clean-a–thon, pointed out the importance of keeping the shoreline clean.

Backing him were members of the executive management team, pointing out the benefits of waste management and ensuring the mangroves are kept clean.

Partners in this program were acknowledged by the National Fisheries Authority.

A stakeholder in the program, Mangrove Rehabilitation for Sustainable Managed Healthy program or MARSH has been working on addressing marine pollution.

The other two components of the program are, Enhancement of corals and mangrove replanting.

The latter is to increase areas as nursery grounds for juvenile fish.

Finance secretary, Dr. Ken Nangang yesterday visited the Rigo district and Abau district treasury office in what he says to be the first of many more such visits to District treasury offices in the Central province and around the country.

Dr. Nangang said the visit was to show officers on the ground that the finance department is working as a team and said it also gives the department and opportunity to know what is being done in the districts.
