Unlike any other usual strides at home in Port Moresby Golf Course, today marks a new chapter for PNG amateur golf champion, Morgan Anato.
The golfer teed off as a professional in the PNG Open against the defending champion Lachlan Barker and Cory Crawford
Being introduced to the course as a caddy in 2012, Anato went on to enjoy a decorated amateur career around PNG and a recent one in Dubai before taking a swing at the professional level.
Having been backing Anato for about five years Nambawan Savings and Loan Society Chief Executive Officer, John Solok said it’s been about 17 years since a local Papua New Guinean turned professional and they are proud of Anato alongside Brian Takir, Gideon Takili and Soti Dinki.
He said Anato is their brand ambassador and the local golf community is behind them.
“To where we are now it’s a very pleasing moment for us. I’m sure Morgan is very proud to be here. It is a very momentous occasion,” Solok said.
“It’s been after 17 years; the first Papua New Guinean takes the tee off as professional golfer.”
He said it is a great day for the people involved in the journey as he calls on locals to get behind the local golfers.
Anato takes the course alongside the two Australians under the cloud bags of Port Moresby weather which experienced light showers since last night and is continuing today.
The PNG Open will go on for the whole of this week and conclude on Sunday.
