As Papua New Guinea National Women’s Football Team lace up their boots to represent the country against Vanuatu tomorrow in the OFC FIFA Women’s World Cup qualifiers in Fiji, the football body thanks the Somare legacy for a united PNG.
Papua New Guinea Football Association General Secretary, Ahmjad Tekwie said late Sir Michael Somare is a figure that united the nation and today sports and football in particular continues to carry the legacy forward.
“This is the day we can reflect on late Sir Michale Thomas Somare, one of our founding fathers and what he has done for us, pre-independence, during independence and after that. He is one of the great leaders that we had and the first of the eight Prime Minster. This day, we (football) mark his fifth anniversary since his passing in 2021.”
He said football continues to carry the flag of this nation on international stages and that in its self-shows how far the nation has come.
He said PNGFA is currently hoping that the women’s team will make history and break into the FIFA Women’s world cup.
“It just depends on the girls, making sure they take all the opportunity and I am confident we will sit on top of the pool,” Tekwie said.
PNG is in Pool B along with Vanuatu, Fiji and New Caledonia. The women’s team will take on Vanuatu tomorrow February 27 at 12pm, followed by Fiji on Monday, March 02, at 4pm before ending the pool round against New Caledonia next Thursday, March 5, 2026.
The regional tournament is the qualifiers for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup tournament that will take place in Brazil.
