MSG CUP 2025 GRANDFINAL UNDER DARK CLOUDS OF UNCERTAINTY

The 2025 Melanesian Spear Headgroup Prime Minister’s Cup grandfinal in Port Moresby is under dark clouds of uncertainty following continuous downpour since yesterday evening.

The granfinal match scheduled for the women’s division will kick of with PNG taking on Fiji at 12pm followed by PNG defending their title against Vanuatu in the men’s division at 3pm. The grounds are set and teams all in for the match under the rain.

Despite the current bad weather in Port Moresby, Vanuatu is ready to back their team away from home.

This was seen as the Ministry of the Prime Minster – Vanuatu uploading a television set up on their official Facebook page in preparation for the live telecast with the caption “screen at Saralana ready. Vanuatu yumi go!”

They will be screening the match live at Saralana and Freshwater Football Stadium.

However, the weather report for the next 12 hours issued by PNG National Weathers Service as of 2pm yesterday, Port Morsby is expecting cloudy periods, with rain showers and isolated thunderstorms.

As the result of the wet condition the host organizing committee (HOC), through the tournament director’s office decided to cancel yesterday’s men’s third and fourth play-off.

The Men’s third and fourth place playoff between Solomon Islands and Fiji on Saturday, November 22, 2025 has been officially abandoned due to severe weather conditions and an unplayable pitch surface.

The match, which was tied 1–1 at halftime, could not resume after the break as the conditions on the field deteriorated significantly.

In line with FIFA’s safeguarding responsibilities and match safety standards, the officials initially suspended the match to allow time for conditions to improve. After 30 minutes of suspension, the match officials reassessed the field and determined that continuing the match would pose risks to players and officials’ safety and wellbeing.

This was expressed in a statement from the HOC. They also clarified that there would not be any rematch for the abandon match.
