MINISTER KILEPA CALLS FOR GLOBAL SOLIDARITY AT GCF 10 IN BRAZIL

Minister for Environment, Conservation and Climate Change Simo Kilepa appealed for increased international support and solidarity to address the rising challenges posed by climate change.

This was stated during the tenth anniversary of the Green Climate Fund (GCF 10). Papua New Guinea (PNG) positioned itself as a prominent advocate for the Pacific region.

“Climate change poses severe threats to Papua New Guinea and our Pacific neighbors,” Kilepa said.

The Green Climate Fund represents a unique coalition of nations committed to action. With over USD 19 billion mobilized for developing countries, it is a powerful symbol of global progress,” he added.

GCF Executive Director Mafalda Duarte, who announced a record USD 3.26 billion in new climate finance programmed for 2025 reflects on the journey.

“This COP rightly focuses on implementation and accountability. It is timely to reflect on ten years of programming and delivery, and to assess what we have learned and where we should go next,” Duarte said

The launch of the GCF 10 Impact Report marked a significant milestone in the Fund’s journey, tracing its evolution since the first project approvals in November 2015, prior to the adoption of the Paris Agreement.

The report emphasizes GCF’s expanding influence in supporting climate resilience across developing nations.

The Fund’s total portfolio now comprises 336 projects, amounting to USD 19.3 billion in GCF resources and USD 78.7 billion with anticipated co-financing.

Hence, PNG’s climate finance portfolio continues to expand, with GCF-supported initiatives aiding communities in adapting to rising sea levels, conserving biodiversity, and building sustainable livelihoods.

As GCF commemorates a decade of impact, PNG remains at the forefront – advocating for climate justice, amplifying Pacific SIDS voices, and reaffirming its dedication to a sustainable future.
