POLICE TIGHTEN RULES FOR SAFE 50TH INDEPENDENCE IN MADANG

Police in Madang have rolled out special operations to keep order during Papua New Guinea’s 50th Independence Anniversary celebrations in the province.

Acting Provincial Police Commander Superintendent Robert Baim said the measures are to make sure the Golden Jubilee is celebrated safe and peacefully.

“This is an important milestone for the country. We ask everyone to respect the law and make the 50th anniversary a safe and memorable one,” PPC Baim said.

Those who decide to celebrate in a rowdily will face its consequences with hefty fines spell out by PPC Baim.

He said K5,000 police bail will be charged to those caught producing or drinking homebrew (Yawa). K5,000 police bail for premises owners who allow loud music after 10pm and K2,000 police bail for drinking in public places, or inside moving vehicles and outboard motors.

Baim said police will be out in full force across the province and appealed to the public to celebrate responsibly.
