The Chief Executive Officer of Kalang Advertising, Bill Wartovo has called for tougher laws to protect children in Papua New Guinea from social media danger.

Mr. Wartovo made this call during a Permanent Parliamentary Committee Inquiry on Communication at Rapopo Resort in East New Britain this week.

The discussion revealed a truth about many children are choosing phones over books, resulting in poor reading and writing skills.

“We need laws to force children back to reading,” he said.

The chief executive officer pointed out that a grade five student can barely read and makes it a major educational crisis caused by excessive screen time.

Mr. Wartovo suggested that implementing strong technology controls to block inappropriate content and limit to children’s internet usage.

He emphasized the necessity of a law that promotes reading among children, as young people are losing basic learning skills.

This also revealed bigger worries about social media spreading lies, inappropriate content, and harming values.

The CEO called for nationwide education programs and regular police training to fight online dangers.
