Doctors want justice after attack by drunkard PNGDF officer

By Jack Lapauve Jr – EMTV News, Port Moresby

The National Doctors Association is calling for immediate discipline of a member of the PNG Defense Force, after a doctor was brutally attacked in Port Moresby’s North Waigani.

President of the PNG Doctors’ Association, Dr. James Naipao, says the particular officer must be disciplined.

The National Doctors’ Association has given 10 days to police and the PNG Defense Force to establish investigations, and for justice to prevail. This follows the attack on Dr. Dean Wahembari, a serving ENT Training Registrar at Port Moresby General Hospital. The attack has left Dr Wahembari with injuries to one of his eyes, and damage to his ears. This is not the first time medical staff members have been attacked by members of the disciplined forces. Members of the National Doctors Association say a possible strike and shutdown of services will be staged if drastic steps are not taken by authorities to discipline the officer responsible.

According to the PNG Defense Force, the particular officer has been apprehended and detained for the legal process to take effect as investigations progress.

Police have also given an assurance to work with PNGDF. “We are working with PNGDF to make sure the incident is investigated and the accused officer is held responsible”.

The victim, Dr Wahembari, is receiving treatment at the Port Moresby General Hospital.
