PNG Biomass is developing tree plantations with the help of local landholders and communities. The project will provide a long-term renewable source of power to Morobe Province.
The two main motives of the plantations are expected to generate power for the Ramu Grid, and the capturing of carbon emissions from the atmosphere.
The project will establish 16,000 hectares of tree plantation.
Last week, PNG Biomass conducted an extensive round of stakeholder and engagement consultations to explain the carbon certification.
An important element of the consultation process was explaining the role of carbon emission in climate change and global warming. The carbon captured by these newly planted trees can be traded on international markets in the form of “carbon credits”.
These credits can be bought by companies to offset the carbon they produce in their operations.
Once the plantation is established, PNG Biomass will have 20 million trees that all capture carbon.
