Affordable Electricity a Must: Basil

Papua New Guinea’s National Electricity Roll Out Plan can only be achieved if there is consistent power supply.

Communications Minister, Sam Basil plans to take this plan to Cabinet for approval.

Minister Basil addressed the recent Ramu Grid Roundtable Workshop for Stakeholders in Madang.

The National Development Strategic Plan 2030 projects that 70 percent of the population will access electricity.

However, making electricity accessible and affordable remains a major challenge for the country.

The National Electricity Roll Out Plan has the potential to contribute significantly but only if it is resourced and implemented as outlined in the Alotau (II) Accord.

This calls for the creation of a public-private partnership into the energy sector to improve and upgrade provision of accessible, reliable and affordable electricity.

Minister Basil would like clarity on the State’s current policy intentions on the role of private sector investment for the generation and use of electricity.
