CPL PNG Lewas Eyes Women’s WT20Q competition

The CPL PNG Lewas are eyeing the ICC Women’s World T20 Qualifier in the Netherlands.

The International Cricket Council announced the host nation yesterday, with the Lewas now having only 7 months to prepare as much as they can.

The PNG Lewas qualified for next year’s ICC WWT20Q after winning the ICC WWT20 East-Asia-Pacific (EAP) Qualifier in Japan earlier this year.

The Lewas also competed in the last ICC WWT20Q in Thailand in 2015, where they won the Plate Trophy.

The dates and the host country of the Women’s World T20 Qualifiers confirmed yesterday by the ICC. The Lewas will compete in the 8-team tournament in the 2nd of the 2 groups of four competition format.

After the group stages, the top two teams will proceed to the trophy final and the final contest for a spot in the World Cup.

In both groups, there will be there will be Semi-finals, Finals and anking matches.

That means each team will be playing five matches regardless of their finishing ranks.

For the Lewas, despite falling short of a strong finish in last year’s World Vup, the Lewas will this time fight for a World Cup spot again.

Training has been ongoing for them since returning from the East Asia Pacific Qualifiers in Sano, Japan.

The gain of entry to the World Cup once more would mean they get another chance to vie for a One Day International Status.
