30 YEARS OF MISSION: DWU LAE ALUMNI CHAPTER LAUNCHED MAJOR FUNDRAISER

Divine Word University Lae Alumni Chapter hosted the DWU 30th Anniversary Fundraising Corporate Dinner at the Lae International Hotel recently, to drive its 30th Anniversary Mission and Community Impact.
According to DWU, the funds raised from the event will support DWU’s mission to celebrate 30 years of “Serving the Nation with Quality Education,” while giving back to vital initiatives, including the ANGAU Memorial Provincial Hospital and other community projects identified by the DWU Lae Alumni Chapter.
Chief Executive Officer of the Morobe Provincial Health Authority Dr. Kipas Binga, outlined the critical role DWU plays in strengthening the country’s healthcare system.
He acknowledged the university’s significant contribution to producing medical professionals and highlighted the importance of practical training through partnerships such as the Memorandum of Agreement signed between DWU and ANGAU Memorial Provincial Hospital.
“Our population continues to grow rapidly, and with it comes increasing pressure on our health system. We need not only knowledge, but the right attitude towards service, responsibility, and leadership.”
“The training and opportunities provided by Divine Word University are critical in preparing our doctors and health workers to meet these challenges and serve our nation effectively.”
The President of Divine Word University, Professor Fr. Philip Gibbs, reflected on the significance of the 30-year milestone, describing it as a celebration of opportunities experienced throughout the university’s journey.
He highlighted DWU’s growth from its early beginnings as an institute to a university with five campuses, producing over 25,000 graduates and more than 100 doctors. He expressed appreciation to sponsors and commended the DWU Lae Alumni Chapter for organizing the initiative, while encouraging continued expansion of the university’s contribution across Papua New Guinea and the Pacific.
The Vice President of the DWU Lae Alumni Chapter, Ludwina Philemon, reminded attendees of the deep connections formed through the University, stating that the theme of “Serving the Nation with Quality Educations,” was alive in the room.
She stressed that supporting DWU means supporting the next generation of leaders in Papua New Guinea, encouraging alumni to wear their identity with pride and to continue opening doors for those who follow. She concluded by affirming that together, “we serve for the good of this nation.”
Chief Executive Officer of PNG Mining and Petroleum Hospitality Services Ltd Jonathan Corotan, spoke on the importance of integrity, community service, and seizing opportunities.
Sharing his personal journey, he emphasized that success comes to those willing to take risks and act with purpose.
“As one of my lecturers always said, ‘strike whilst the iron is hot,’ meaning you must seize the opportunity that is presented to you. Success comes to those who are willing to take risks,” said Corotan.
He highlighted the strong connection between education and industry, adding, “Together, education and industry become powerful partners in building our nation.”
He also proudly announced internship opportunities offered to DWU graduates, describing them as pathways to creating opportunities for young Papua New Guineans and bridging the gap between learning and employment.
“These placements are more than internships; they represent real opportunities for our young people and a bridge between learning and the future.” said Corotan.
The event brought together leaders from government, education, different industries, alumni, and the wider community in celebration of the university’s enduring contribution to national development.
