by Theckla Gunga – EM TV, Wewak

The burden of having to walk long distances to fetch water daily, will soon be eased for the people of the Yangoru – Saussia District of the East Sepik Province.

This made possible through the partnership established between the Yangoru district and Oxfam International for a water project for the area.

The project, when completed, will enable seven villages to receive clean water supply, from a river source in the district.

This partnership is the first of its kind with Yangoru being the first district to partner with Oxfam International to bring this basic yet greatly needed service to the district level and sets a precedent for other districts to follow.

The payment to commence work on the project was presented today, with a cheque of K250 000 made out to Oxfam. Survey work will begin immediately, and the construction phase should follow soon after.

The announcement brought much joy to the people who are anxious to see water running through their villages soon.
