Utu Secondary School set up memorial site for Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare

Students and teachers at Utu Secondary School in Kavieng, New Ireland Province have been paying their tributes to the late Grand Chief Sir Michael Thomas Somare at a memorial site at the school.

The memorial site is set up in front of a building that Sir Michael lived in during the 1950s, when he started his teaching career as a young teacher at Utu Intermediate School, now known as the Utu Secondary School.

The building has been converted into a clinic since and will be named Somare Aidpost. Posters of the late Grand Chief will be displayed in front of the clinic.

In reference to the late Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare’s ties to Utu Secondary School, his close friend and ally, New Ireland Governor, Sir Julius Chan has chosen Utu Secondary School grounds to host a unity church service to honor the late Grand Chief.

The service will start at 10am on Friday 12th March 2021.

He stated that the gathering at Utu will be the only officially recognized gathering and other events will not be entertained, however, other schools, Churches and individual organisations, Councils and Wards in other parts New Ireland are being urged to hold their own services in their own locations.
