PNG track stars, Sharon Kwarula and Wala Gime, impressed in their respective Hurdles events at the PNG Athletics 53rd Open and Under 18 National Championships.
Using the competition as a preliminary meet, and a chance to catch up with old team-mates, the two US-based athletes were candid about their prospects in taking home gold for the country.
Under the ‘Go for Gold’ programme, Athletics PNG has been sending its brightest prospects to the US for training.
Two of those athletes have been Wala Gime and Sharon Kwarula, both of whom specialize in the Hurdles track events.
Wala Gime, a short course specialist in the 110m Hurdles, and Sharon Kwarula a 400m Hurdler. In the National Championships itself, they both took part in various events.
Sharon, coming second in her pet event, the 400m hurdles, behind a very determined Donna Koniel, but dominating in the 100m hurdles, and coming in first, in the women’s 100m Dash Open invitational, which boasted a field of some of PNG’s best sprinters including Raphaella Baki and Mae Koime.
Wala Gime showing brilliant technique to overcome good opposition in both his events, the 110m and 400m hurdles.
