UOG Extends to Early Childhood Education

The University of Goroka is now extending its diploma program for early childhood education to other Teachers colleges.

The University has so far trialed the program in West New Britain, Western Highlands, Jiwaka and Chimbu.

The pro vice chancellor of the University of Goroka, Dr Teng Waninga, says the early childhood program aims to improve the quality of early childhood learning.

This is in accordance with the Education Department’s reform initiatives to improve the quality of teaching of elementary teachers.

“We need to work with the Teaching Service Commission and the Education Department to recognize our early childhood program, so that the diploma that we give is recognized by the commission and the department, so they go into the elementary program that the government has in the education curriculum,” Dr Waninga said.

Early childhood education is fundamental to a child’s learning, but there is little to no access to this.

The National Education Plan 2015 to 2019 targets quality education for all, however there is no formal early childhood sector.

“ UOG is the only institution offering this program. If the government is serious about early childhood learning, then this is the way to go,” Dr Waninga said.
