Surf Tournament Deferred

The 2014 International Women’s Surf Tournament to be held at Lido Village in Vanimo, West Sepik, has been deferred to next year.

This comes after President of the Papua New Guinea Surf Association, Andrew Abel, wants to officially launch a surf documentary before the start of the tournament.

The documentary titled Splinters was also shot in Lido village. Splinters highlight some of the social issues like Violence Against Women.

Surfing is a unique sport in the Madang, Sepik and New Guinea Island provinces.

West Sepik has the highest number of Registered Surf Clubs in the PNG Surf Association or SAPNG, followed by New Ireland, East Sepik and Madang.

These clubs include Yako , Waromo, Sunset and Vanimo Surf Loge Club with the  recently added Urban Board Riders.

With the surfing season to start in June, surfers from the difference clubs in Vanimo will be showing off their skills out sea.

The Vanimo Surf Club and also the two time defending champions in 2007 and 2011, will be defending their title in the national surf tournament to be held in Vanimo next year.
