Despite the team’s inexperience, former athletics great and assistant sprints coach, Subul Babo has full confidence in the team.
During the training camp at the National Sporting Institute in Goroka, Babo said, “I’m confident we can do it at the games, next year.”
Subul Babo was part of the fantastic four that won gold in the 1991 South Pacific Games for the 1x400m relay, and the 400m sprints alone.
Babo holds the Pacific Games record for the 400m sprints, at 24.05seconds and said, he would love to see one of the youngsters beat his record at the 2015 Games.
The athletics contingent have an advantage in the lead up to the 2015 Pacific Games. A bulk of Papua New Guinean athletes will flock the city of Lae, to compete in the National Championships.
This will assist in building momentum, encouraging competition and setting the pace for the Games next year.
