State Ministers Visit Hela and Expert Says Aftershocks to Continue

Inter-Government Relations Minister, Kevin Isifu, Finance Minister, James Marape and Defence Minister, Solan Mirisin visited affected areas of Hela yesterday.

After the visit, the State Ministers said the damage caused is severe and Government intervention is at hand.

Hela Governor, Philip Undialu, says the Hela Provincial Government has established the Provincial Disaster Committee who will be working with other authorities for the relief and relocation of affected communities.

Meanwhile, medivac teams have confirmed airlifting the injured to Tari Hospital for treatment. Authorities will continue more medivacs tomorrow.

Meanwhile, aftershocks are expected to continue over the next few weeks says an earthquake expert.

Acting Director Geohazard Management Group, Chris McKee, says this will be felt in Hela and Southern Highlands. He says, authorities are monitoring the situation. Aftershocks have continued since last Monday and that will continue for weeks.

People have been urged to take precautions when moving around.
