School Boy Rugby

PNGRFU delegates who travelled to New Zealand to attend the “Growing The Game” Workshop have arrived back in the country with a number of initiatives in place to construct a pathway for school kids into the under 20’s rugby, and later the national sevens team.

With a number of mass participation programs under the control of unions around the country, PNGRFU have now announced a under 16th Regional titles, to be held annually.

The Under 16 Regional Titles which is set to commence in term 3 this year, will welcome schools from 3 conferences; the southern region, the northern region, and the eastern region.

In-country development Officer, Frank Genia says the visit to New Zealand proved that PNGRFU was heading in the right direction in terms of implementing a sustainable pathway for both young men and women.

Before PNGRFU can confirm a sanctioned school boy rugby competition, they must establish proper in house rugby competitions, says Genia.

With the support of SCRUM PNG and Morobe Rugby Union on board, junior rugby programs have now been ticked off the to-do list, while school boy rugby remains a working progress.
