Revival of Rugby 15s in PNG

By Skola Sengi – EM TV Sport, Port Moresby

Although the successof Rugby 7s has overshadowed that of Rugby 15s, recently appointed head coach and rugby ambassador, Sydney Wesley is keen on reviving the 15s concept around the country.

A much needed player base, along with selections and exposure, is required for the strength of the code to grow.

The recently announced Pukpuks 15s squad will go into camp come February 2015, and will be trimmed down for the test match against Singapore next year.

Port Moresby and Lae have been running simultaneous 15s competitions for a number of years and this is evident in the selection of players in the Pukpuks 15s Squad.

Coach for the Pukpuks 15s squad, Sydney Wesley, is keen on reviving and strengthening 15s competitions’ in centres around the country, for a wider selection of players.

As part of their campaign to the Oceania Championships, the Pukpuks will face Singapore in a test match.

This will be an avenue for the team’s exposure and credibility for recognition, and a lift in the current IRB rankings.

With the successof the 7s tournaments around the country and Pukpuks 7s team this year, Rugby 15s attracts the biggest following in Port Moresby and Lae.
