Referendum Results Out

The desire for political Independence for the people of Bougainville is one step closer, with Bougainvilleans overwhelmingly voting for Independence in a referendum.

Bougainville Referendum Commission Chairman, Bertie Ahern, announced the results of the Bougainville Referendum in Buka this afternoon.

The results;
Greater Autonomy 3,043 (2.3%)
Independence 176,928 (97.7%)
Total Votes 181,067

The results, and Writ for this referendum are expected to be delivered to the Governor General in Port Moresby later this week.
