In the aftermath of yesterday’s riots and looting in Port Moresby, Prime Minister Hon. James Marape has issued a heartfelt appeal to all Papua New Guineans, urging them to prioritize peace and normalcy. The Prime Minister expressed his deep concern for the unnecessary incidents that occurred.
During a press conference held this morning at Sir Manasupe Haus in Port Moresby, Prime Minister Marape conveyed his sympathies and apologies to the businesses that fell victim to destruction and looting. He assured that the government would provide assistance wherever possible.
Prime Minister Marape addressed the root cause of the unrest, emphasizing that, “Pay issues of members of the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary and other public servants were brought to the attention of the Government. As a result, the absence of police presence led to riots and looting in certain parts of our city.”
“What happened in Port Moresby should not allow people in other centers to do likewise. I appeal to all citizens right across our country that we were placed under unnecessary stress and duress yesterday in Port Moresby.” he said.
Acknowledging the ripple effect of the events in the capital, Prime Minister Marape stated that it is unfortunate that other centers are trying to copy what happened in Port Moresby yesterday.
“I appeal to people in these centers to realise that this is our country, and we have to take care and ownership of it.” He said.
Prime Minister Marape stressed that breaking laws does not achieve anything.
“Violence begets violence, lawlessness causes lawlessness.” he said.
In an effort to rebuild and support those affected, Prime Minister Marape expressed his empathy towards the business houses.
“Your government will look into some relief measures to help business houses after the losses they suffered. Some of them have been in the country for many years, and the attack on them was totally uncalled for and unjustified. We will look at how best we can help companies affected.” he said.
“I urge all citizens to step up today and respect your country. Let us build our nation together rather than destroy it.” he added.
