Just a month into the Porgera Call out Operation in the Enga Province, a woman has been confirmed dead and two men hospitalized.
The woman was a victim of illegal mining. One man was shot by police. He was armed and patrolling the mine site, and the other man was a senior magistrate who got into a car accident after drinking and driving.
The Joint Operation is now targeting illegal miners and will raid hot spots for illegal firearms.
The operation controller, Chief Inspector, Norman Kambo, confirmed that the woman from the SML area was killed by a mudslide whilst searching for gold rocks last week in the stock pile at Wara Kaiya.
The 35 year old mother of 8 died instantly while her husband, who accompanied her, has a broken leg.
Another man was shot by the mobile squad patrolling the Kumbipara area next to the mine area. The man, identified as a Southern Highlander, was armed with a rifle and escorting a party of illegal miners. When he saw the police, he fired two shots and tried to escape when he was wounded on the shoulder. All the illegal miners managed to escape.
The second man is a local magistrate who was reported to have stolen confiscated alcohol, consumed it and got into a car accident. The two men are in police custody.
The Joint Police and Defence Personnel have now gone back into the Kumbipara area in search of illegal firearms.
A liquor ban has also been imposed in the province. Locals have been warned to cooperate with the local authorities and the deployed security personnel.
The joint operation of police and Defence personnel is now into its first month. In the next 2 months, their target is set on tracking down illegal miners and raiding hot spots for illegal firearms.
