Policeman killed at Gordons

by Theckla Gunga – EM TV, Port Moresby

Gordons Market and all nearby shops were forcibly closed this morning, following the death of a young police officer last night.

The police officer was stabbed twice by a bystander late yesterday evening. He was rushed to Port Moresby General Hospital’s accidents and emergency ward but died five hours later.

The details of the type of weapon used in the killing were not released but EM TV News understands that investigations into the killing are underway.

In retaliation, police officers demolished the informal market section and blocked off all roads leading to Gordons Market. While details of the incident are not clear at this stage, it is believed the officer was on his way home when he was stabbed at a bus stop.

He died at 11:30 last night and his body was transported to a funeral home early this morning. All shops were closed and the travelling public and bus operators were denied entry into the main bus stop.

At 10am this morning, the main suspect was transported from Port Moresby General Hospital to Boroko Police Station by Hohola police.

Gordons Police Station Commander Mark Monisakave called the killing uncalled for. The death of the police officer has increased the number of police officers attacked at Gordons Market alone to six in the last three months.

The market will remain closed for an indefinite period and market vendors are advised to sell their goods elsewhere.
