Parkop: Deactivation of SIM Cards a Logistical Nightmare

NICTA’s deadline to deactivate all unregistered SIM cards by 31st December, has been described as a logistical nightmare by NCD Governor, Powes Parkop.

Governor Parkop says this decision doesn’t account for the bulk of the population in rural areas.

The decision to deactivate all unregistered SIM cards is a costly exercise, says Governor Parkop.

He said there should not be any deadline for subscribers; thus allowing them to resister at their own convenient time, and NICTA should deal with mobile operators.

This week, a lawyer, Baundo Francis, based on human rights ground, filed an urgent application with the Waigani National Court.

He said the SIM card deactivation process is unfriendly especially to service men to service providers registration.

And the Catholic Bishops Conference of Papua New Guinea and Solomon Islands called for NICTA to extend the SIM registration deadline.
