MoU Signed to Establish PNG’s First APEC Study Centre

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed today for the establishment of Papua New Guinea’s first APEC Study Centre.

The MoU now enables the National Research Institute (NRI) to assist with policy analysis and design in preparation for 2018.

APEC Study Centres are set up to undertake research, disseminate information and facilitate discussion on APEC-related issues, initiatives and processes to help support APEC’s vision and goals.

The MoU was signed at the Manasupe Haus today, following one of the regular meetings of the National Organising Committee for APEC 2018.

APEC Study Centres are set up in APEC member economies to foster regional cooperation among tertiary, and research institutes to promote academic collaboration on key regional economic challenges.

Together, these hubs from the APEC economies form the APEC Study Centre Consortium which holds an annual conference hosted by one of the APEC Study Centres in the APEC Host Economy for that year.

NRI Director, Dr.Charles Yala, said the National Research Institute will do all it can for when PNG will host its APEC Study Centre Consortium come May next year.

Over the years, the APEC Study Centre Consortium conferences have analyzed and provided policy recommendations for a wide range of APEC issues.

This year’s Consortium will be held in Vietnam in May.
