Mexico USA in Joint Bid

Canada, USA and Mexico declared their intention to formally submit a unified bid to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Monday, April 10. The historic unified bid, which would represent the first time that three nations would jointly host a FIFA competition, was announced by CONCACAF.

Canadian Soccer Association president, Victor Montagliani, U.S. Soccer Federation president Sunil Gulati, and Mexican Football Federation president, Decio deMaria.

The 10 April announcement by the three CONCACAF member nations was made at One World Observatory in New York on the 102nd and top floors of the One World Trade Center, the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere.

The rough plan calls for approximately 60 of the matches to take place in the United States and 10 each in Mexico and Canada according to Gulati.

As for whether U.S. President Donald Trump’s plan for a border wall to stem illegal immigration from Mexico was a hurdle, Gulati said Trump encouraged the bid and that the joint effort required and won support from the government’s of all three countries.

“We outlined through someone who was communicating directly with the president what we wanted to do, and the message we got back was that the president encouraged us to go forward … said he was supportive of it and very pleased that Mexico was a part of it,” the U.S. soccer head said.
