By Lucy Kopana – EMTV News, Lae

After ten years of building part of the Madang -Baiyer Road, the PNGDF’s Engineering Battalion brought back machinery used in the project, marking the completion of phase one.

According to the Engineering Battalion’s Operations Officer, Major Mote Nukama, up to forty- three kilometers of the road has already been completed.

“For the Baiyer side of the project, we have completed it. We have reached the Jimi river and we are recouping the machines back to Igam Barracks”.

The Baiyer – Madang road project is part of the governments intent to build road links.

Whilst constructing the roads, the battalion has faced challenges with funding and servicing of the vehicles and machinery, to ensure work continued. This is according to Engineering Battalions Acting Commander, Major David Tiki.

Operations Officer, Major Nukama says the vehicles and machinery that were brought back will be serviced and sent to Aiom-Simbai, in the Madang Province. Phase two will start in January with road construction from Aiom, Simbai, through to Jimi.
