Two newly elected councilors from the Madang Urban LLG and six other men were arrested and charged by Lae Police yesterday, after being found in possession of drugs.
Police did not disclose the amount of drugs, however, reports state that the drugs were found stashed under the seats when a search was conducted.
All eight suspects were charged for drugs, however, one of the councillors had four additional charges laid against him after police found more drugs, an unlicensed firearm, live ammunition, and his phone containing pornographic material, all in his waist bag.
Another suspect was also charged for being in possession of pornographic materials.
Lae Metropolitan Commander, Anthony Wagambie Jr said the CID in Lae and Madang are working closely to ensure the charges regarding an unlawful firing of firearms by one of the council elects in Madang is also laid. That matter will be transferred to the Madang District Court.
All 8 suspects have been detained and will appear in the Lae District Court on Monday.
