Air Niugini’s Q400 aircraft arrived at Buka Airport this afternoon carrying the casket of the late Governor General. President, Chief John Momis said Bougainville has lost a great leader who was very instrumental in the negotiation of the Peace Process on the island.

“You have served the people of Bougainville and Papua New Guinea well. You have contributed to the making of the Bougainville Peace Agreement, which put an end to a bloody war,” Momis said.

Momis said the late Governor General participated in serious discussions of which the fruits are enjoyed today, both at the national and regional level.

The casket of the late Governor General was then taken to the chamber of the Bougainville House of Representatives.

Member for Hagogohe Constitutuency, Robert Hamal Sawa said the late Sir Michael was an inspiration to his political career.

“Our people in Bougainville and the leadership in Bougainville we salute you, Sir Michael for the achievment. You made it happen for us, that’s why we are here today,” Sawa told the chamber.

Members of the Bougainville House of Representatives and the pubic also had the chance to view the body of the late Governor General.
