Lakatani on Mass Arrest

More than 200 men from the Back Road area were all arrested yesterday and brought to the Lae Police station.

This follows ongoing clashes between the Kabwums and Menyamyias in the last three weeks.

This is one of the major clashes that reported a good number of causalities and homes being burnt.

Teenagers including elderly men were part of those arrested, both from the Menyamia and Kabwum camps.

Weapons were also confiscated during the arrest.

Lae Metropolitan Superintendent Ivan Lakatani says police carried out the mass arrest after efforts to stop the fight were ignored by both parties.

He says those arrested were charged with fighting and will be appearing before the court.

Mr Lakatani further stated that the fighting’s having also caused inconvenience with movement of people and vehicles along the Back Road area.

This move by police is likely help restore normalcy in the communities affected.
