Kabwum Teachers raise concerns over TFF funds

By Maryboio Nigani, EMTV Cadet Journalist – Lae

Teachers at Kabwum District in Morobe Province have commented on the cut off amount of Tuition fee free funds that will be implemented next year. The Headteacher for Yalumet Primary school in Kabwum district, Shonney Sokep, said the 15% that would be held back by the Government will affect the school.

“The money that we receive is not enough…and now the cut-off TFF funds will cause problems.”

He said the school runs from enrolment fees, and the school will be affected if fewer students enrol next year. Mr Sokep said in 2012 and 2013 the funds allocated was enough and the school was able to manage its operations. Today, limited teaching materials is a concern for schools in Kabwum.

Similar funding problems were faced in Boyang Primary school. The head teacher, Kuma Torika, said the school currently needs funding support to solve unresolved school issues.

“The TFF policy is good, but our school still have unresolved problems…we lack teaching materials and need funds…the cut-off TFF amount will affect us.” Said Mr Torika. He added that the amount that the school will receive will not be enough to run the school.
