Judge Orders Returning Of Re-Count Results

The Waigani National Court made a final decision for the Madang open by-election results to be returned on September 2.

This was the ruling today by the Waigani National Court. The case was on electoral petitions between Peter Yama and sitting MP Nixon Duban.

Presiding judge, Justice Sir Bernard Sakora issued the direction, ordering the PNG Electoral Commission to produce recount results by both the electronic and manual count.

Last week, the Madang National Court also ordered a recount with the results returned on August 22 after errors and omissions were encountered.

A case filed by petitioner Peter Yama against the PNG Electoral Commission in today's hearing, however, allowed more time for electoral officials to prepare for the recount again.

The court ordered the electoral officials to be deployed from other centres and not Madang.

The results for the Madang open by-election must be returned to the National Court on September 2nd.
